[Custom]

Custom (or bespoke) designs are where designers show their skills. Designing is more than choosing a few colours or matching a fabric to an interior, custom design is about problem solving and creating something no one has seen before.

Often old items used as a starting point and refined to create new and exciting designs which work better, and make use of modern materials.

This 5-tier rack was designed for Caltex Service Stations and Starmarts. It was intended to solve issues which were apparent with the existing racks. A vacuum formed body and impact-resistant pockets completed a design that was robust and also could be mass produced cheaply.

The design of the cabinets was provided by the Robert Rose Design, who asked for the impossible which we happily provided!

The New Dowse Gallery display cabinets were quite challenging and in the end very successful. The way the client required them to be shaped meant special forming procedures and new gluing techniques. These had to be developed and perfected to get crystal clear joins in the unusually shaped acrylic cabinets.

The Salvation Army donation box was based on an existing, but inferior imported donation box. The quality was ramped up as they were NZ made and the branding added for the client.

Custom designed cabinets are are used extensively in museums and galleries or in retail situations. Usually they are made in clear acrylic, but toughened glass is also able to be used if the extra weight and cost is not an issue. Mounts for products and exhibits also can be designed as well as bases and plinths. Cabinets can be made so they flat-pack for easy transportation and storage.

Custom designed safety guards, extraction hoods and machine covers can be made from new tough plastics or built with metal frames and supports. With OSH demanding guards in place on dangerous machines, it is important to design safety guards that are both practical to use and also safe.
